I could start this blog with a laboured, cliché metaphor. Something like, “You don’t just walk up to a 100kg barbell and expect to lift it, so you shouldn’t expect to write a book in a day.”
But let’s be honest: that would be rubbish.
Instead, I want to talk about how a heavy lifting session and a dark noir thriller actually speak the exact same language. Like most people, my time is a scarce commodity. My daily schedule is a relentless rotation of a full-time shift-work job, a taxing commute, and essential time with my family. Tucked into the spaces between those pillars, I hit the gym, commit to my writing, and occasionally work as a background actor on TV and film sets.
For a long time, I tried to build walls between these roles. I didn’t want work stress leaking into family time, or writing ideas distracting me from a heavy squat. But recently, I discovered a profound cross-pollination between the two.
The gym and the desk aren’t isolated silos; they are a two-way street. The discipline required to push through a final, grueling set of repetitions is the exact same mental fortitude needed to finish a difficult chapter.
What about you? Have you ever found that two completely different areas of your life suddenly started lending strength to one another?
The Power of an Unconventional Routine
My work schedule is a bit chaotic. I work full-time, but on a shift pattern that mostly covers afternoons and evenings. While that might sound like a nightmare to some, it’s actually my secret weapon. It allows me to hit the gym mid-morning when the usual chaotic rush has cleared out.
Without the pressure of a ticking clock—or a crowd of broccoli-headed teenagers bouncing off one another—I can focus entirely on the physical challenge. This stillness acts as a sanctuary.

It’s my “me-time” to process my thoughts and build the resilience needed for the day ahead. By the time the professional world demands my attention, I’ve already won my morning.
Two Goals, One Blueprint
Looking at the year ahead, I’ve set two primary challenges for myself. To keep them from overwhelming me, I’m treating my creative goals exactly like my physical ones.
- The Physical Challenge: I’m aiming to drastically reduce my body fat while maintaining muscle mass for an upcoming fitness photoshoot. To do this, I’ve structured my training into a strict rotation: Upper A, Lower A, Upper B, Lower B, and a dedicated conditioning day. By programming this into my Garmin watch, I’ve automated the logistics so I can focus purely on the effort.
- The Creative Challenge: I am preparing to release my latest noir thriller—a dark, modern twist on the classic whodunnit. Mirroring my fitness logic, I’ve taken an architectural approach to the book. I’ve listed every chapter with a brief summary of the action. This structure ensures the story remains cohesive, allowing me to write chapters out of order depending on my mood, without losing the plot’s intricate thread.
Using a strict structure helps me bypass decision fatigue, whether I’m looking at a barbell or a blank page. Do you prefer to rigidly plan your goals like this, or do you fly by the seat of your pants?
Setting the Atmosphere: From Soundtracks to Scenery
Music is the connective tissue between my physical and creative worlds. It sets the mood, whether I’m bracing for a heavy lift or drafting a tense interrogation scene.
For the thriller, I immerse myself in dark, cinematic intensity. Soundtracks like The Batman, Daredevil: Born Again, or the moody atmosphere of Dexter help me build the world and direct my characters. Sometimes, that intense audio bleeds into my workouts, helping me drown out the background noise of the gym.
Conversely, my workout playlists usually lean toward harder beats or tracks from the Rocky and Creed soundtracks. But the cross-pollination goes both ways. Occasionally, when Spotify runs out of songs and plays a random, atmospheric track, it will spark a twisted plot twist I hadn’t considered while I’m mid-bench press.
The Breakthrough on the Treadmill
If the lifting prep builds my discipline, the treadmill is where the actual magic happens. I set the timer, speed, and incline, and I completely zone out.

The rhythmic thud of my feet acts like a metronome for my thoughts.
It grounds my body while my mind is free to wander into the dark, rain-slicked alleys of my novel. In this steady state of exertion, the narrative knots I’ve been struggling with for days suddenly begin to untie themselves.
Because I have my pre-made list of chapters, I know exactly where these new ideas fit. The moment a breakthrough crystallizes during a run, I pause to pop it into a Keep note on my phone. It syncs automatically, waiting on my laptop for when I get home.
By the time I step off the treadmill, the endorphin rush has wiped away the mental clutter of my commute. I feel accomplished, clear-headed, and ready to write without the usual self-criticism that stalls a first draft.
