Discover Sports Day: Katy and Ben’s Unique Journey

2018 / Movie

When her parents are deemed unfit to care for her, rebellious misfit pre-teen Katy Burke is sent to live with the uncle she has never met Ben. An isolated, lonely and dejected army veteran cursed with fighting the demons he brought back form war.

Introduction

Ben and Katy stand on the porch of his house out in the middle of nowhere watching the social services lady drive away. They look at each other like strangers thrust together, trying to figure out the other. “Come on then” Ben announces walking into the house.
They go to the living room and sit in separate chairs. Still looking at one another completely mystified by one another. Until the silence is broken “How many channels you got?” Katy asks. “What?” replies Ben.
“On the TV, how many channels you got?”
“Enough”
“Wi-fi?”
“Of course”
“What’s the password?”
“No idea”
“You got a PlayStation?”
“What’s that? Like a slide and swings or something?”
Katy stares at him blankly. Ben returns the look.
“The nearest park is ten miles away. The nearest anything is ten miles away” Ben confirms.
“Are you allowed to be this close to children?” Katy asks sarcastically. “The way that woman from social services described you, you shouldn’t be allowed near anyone” Ben replies. “Not an answer” Katy says under a deep sigh looking around the room.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a house this tidy” Katy comments.
“Yeah, your mum and I have very different views on how a person should live” Ben replies.
“Is that the reason you two never talked?”
“One of them”
Katy’s shoulders drop, she’s just playing tennis against the curtains trying to get a conversation out this human pile of granite.
“So, what do you actually do out here, in the middle of fucking nowhere?” She asks.
“We watch our language”
Katy slumps deeper into the chair.
“And I work” Ben offers. “On what?” Is the reply.
Ben gets up and guides her to the back garden, where she’s met with a huge garden filled with growing vegetables, fruit and other forms of foliage, though she has no idea what any of this is.
“What’s all that?” She asks. “Vegetables” Ben answers.
“Eurgh. They’re in the ground!” Katy exclaims. Ben just looks at her completely confused, “Where do you think vegetables come from?”
“I don’t know, the supermarket?”
Ben hangs his head with a big sigh and walks back into the house.
