Introduction
In his family home, Will sits in the armchair in the corner. Around him are his parents and sister Hannah. Will sit’s silently watching daytime TV. Letting everything go on around him. He’s only partly paying attention. His mum and Hannah are arguing about what he should do.
Mum wants him to get up and out, Hannah wants to look after him some more. Fair, given that two weeks ago he tried to kill himself after losing his girlfriend, job and house all within a matter of days. His world has been well and truly rocked.
His Dad is wondering around, trying to keep busy. He, and Will, know all too well to stay out of it when the women of house get into it.
The volume and the intensity of the argument increase. They talking about him as if he’s not there. He’s still broken. But does he want to be fixed.
It’s not going to happen there with that going on.
He gets up and walks out of the room. He can still hear them arguing as he leaves the house all together.
Walking down the road, his head is awash with thoughts. Should he call his ex and try and get her back? What will he do for a job? How can he shut those two up?
He sits on a bench on the side of the road. Alone. His head goes blank as he stares into the nothingness that appears to be his life.
Moments go by. They turn into minutes. Which turns into an hour and he’s still there.
Knowing he can’t stay there forever he gets up and continues his walk.
He reaches a newsagents and spots a poster in the window advertising the EuroMillions jackpot. £180 million.
He stares at it, thinking. His luck must change at some point, right? He didn’t die at his own hands and a shit load painkillers and alcohol for reason. Maybe it was this reason. Maybe the universe was guiding him to this moment. To this place that he hasn’t visited since he moved away from home.
He walks in to the newsagents and up to the stand with the number selection forms. Pen in hand, hovering over the form ready to make his picks.
“Please” he mutters to himself before closing his eyes to “see” the numbers.
The lottery balls fly through his mind, it’s a mess how is he to decided?
One of the balls slows down it’s path. Number 28. He marks it on the form. More numbers come to him. 10, 46, 22, 9.
Now the bonus Lucky Star numbers.
“Please” he repeats to himself. He can see them 5 and 2.
He marks it all on the form and takes to the counter to pay.
He walks back to his parents house. Occasionally looking up to silently pray to God, the Universe whoever will listen.
He hasn’t been a religious or spiritual man before but there’s always time for change, right?
The night of the draw approaches, but he doesn’t watch it. It may jinx it. Plus, he hasn’t told anyone he bought a ticket. He doesn’t want to be seen as a failure in this venture like all the others.
The next morning, he goes online to check the results. He doesn’t have the ticket with him. He knows the numbers, he’s memorised them.
But the numbers on the screen look like the same ones as what he picked. That can’t be right.
He scrambles to get the ticket form his wallet to be sure.
Looking at both the numbers on the screen and on the ticket, they match. He doesn’t believe it.
He keeps staring at it, checking it.
He’s won!
He wants to scream and shout and jump around but he doesn’t know if he should.
From nearly dying just a couple of weeks ago, his life is really about to begin.
